New Year’s Resolutions for Fish Owners

Happy 2020! I’m sure you all have great resolutions for yourself and your family for the new decade, but what about your fish? We invite you to choose any and all of the below resolutions for fish owners to ensure happier, healthier fish in the new year!

Perform ___% water change every ___ week(s)

Put it on your calendar and stick to a regular routine. This is one of the hardest things for our clients to do on a regular basis. It will depend on your system how much volume and how often your water changes will be. We recommend starting with 10% weekly or 25% every other week for tanks and 5-10% weekly for ponds. By testing your water quality parameters, you will be able to get an idea of what you need to tweak. Look here for a complete checklist of tank and pond chores.

Regularly test and log your water quality

If you have any grade schooler’s with science fairs coming up, water quality testing is great because you get to make GRAPHS! Hopefully, you got your new test kit as a holiday gift and can get started on regular testing of your system. Use our handy log to make sure everything stays where it needs to be.

Quarantine any/all new fish additions

By taking this step, you will save time, money and lives. Potentially the lives of all your fish. Don’t take the word of the pet store who’s only had the fish a few days. Quarantine any and all new fish and plant additions to your system to prevent the spread of disease.

Contact your local fish veterinarian

You don’t have to call them, but know their phone number. Write it down and post it next to your tank or pond, just in case. If you don’t need our help, that’s great! But if you do, we’re here to help. Find your local aquatic veterinarian from the American Association of Fish Veterinarians or internationally on the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association.

If you have other resolutions for your fish, we’d love to hear them! Please feel free to share with us and all other fish lovers. Happy New Year!
